Gary Peterson contracted polio at the age of six and spent years in and out of hospitals, operating rooms, and physical therapy sessions. Always a rambunctious kid, he continued to be physically active throughout his childhood and adult life. Gary eventually moved to Nevada County, where he chaired the Nevada County Wheelchair Sports Association board and worked as an independent living specialist and benefits counselor at FREED Center for Independent Living.
